About us

Our history

Indo-Canadians have a rich cultural heritage that is worthy of preservation, promotion, and awareness. The Ottawa-Gatineau area is home to a significant Indo-Canadian population, and it is important to ensure that this heritage is protected and celebrated for future generations.

One organization that is working towards this goal is the India Canada Association (ICA). For over 50 years, the ICA has been a not-for-profit, volunteer-based organization that has served the community in the National Capital Region. The ICA’s mission and mandate remain to create cultural awareness and foster positive relations between Indo-Canadians and the Canadian mainstream. They also strive to connect with many regional organizations serving the interests of individual states and celebrating the unique cultures within India.

The ICA’s efforts are crucial in preserving Indo-Canadian cultural heritage in the Ottawa-Gatineau area. Our events and activities provide an opportunity for members of the community to come together and celebrate their shared cultural identity. They organize cultural festivals, concerts, and exhibitions that showcase various aspects of Indian culture. By doing so, they help to create a sense of belonging and pride among the Indo-Canadian community.

In addition to promoting cultural awareness, the ICA is also an active participant in the affairs of interest to the extended community, association, and its membership. They work to address issues that affect the Indo-Canadian community, such as immigration policies and employment opportunities. They also provide resources and support to community members who are in need.

One example of the ICA’s work in the community is our annual India Day Festival. This festival is a celebration of Indian culture and heritage and is one of the largest cultural events in Ottawa. The festival includes a parade, cultural performances, and food vendors. It is a great opportunity for people of all backgrounds to come together and learn about Indian culture.

Another event organized by the ICA is Diwali, the Festival of Lights. Diwali is a significant cultural event in India, and the ICA’s celebration in Ottawa is a great way for members of the community to come together and celebrate. The event includes cultural performances, food, and fireworks. It is a great way to showcase Indian culture and heritage to the wider community.

The ICA’s efforts to preserve, promote, and raise awareness about Indo-Canadian cultural heritage are not only important for the Indo-Canadian community but for the Ottawa-Gatineau area as a whole. Cultural diversity is an important aspect of any community, and the ICA’s work helps to celebrate and embrace this diversity.

In conclusion, the India Canada Association is a vital organization in the Ottawa-Gatineau area. Our efforts to preserve, promote, and raise awareness about Indo-Canadian cultural heritage are commendable. By providing opportunities for members of the community to come together and celebrate their shared cultural identity, the ICA is helping to create a sense of belonging and pride among the Indo-Canadian community. Their work is an important step towards creating a more inclusive and culturally rich society.
